Basgo nestles in the cold Desert of India, Leh in Jammu & Kashmir state. The complex is notable for 400 year old ruined fortress which includes two large temples and a small shrine. At present, the lama from Hemis Gompa is the head of Management committee. The most important temple is Maitreya temple or the Chamba-Lha-Khang in Ladhaki word, derived from the word Maitreya; means the future Buddha, is located at the highest point. The holistic complex was constructed under the leadership of Tse-wang Namgyal of Namgyal dynasty in 16th century. The temple is famous for its 400 year old original wall paintings.
When you enter the temple, you find a portrait of Vajrapani, means Vajra-in-hand. Below the side of Vajrapani, there are pictures of lord Indra and Brahma on left as well as Vishnu and Brahma are on right side of the portrait. As we go down the portrait, it portrays the royal dress of Kashmir and Mughal of 16th century. The portrait also contains the picture of king of Ladakh; Tse-wang Namgyal with his two brothers and members of royal family with servants. On the left side of picture, Sakyamuni (the future Buddha) is sitting in a meditation posture. It also includes the painting of Atisa who spreaded Buddhism in Tibet and died there in 1054. Towards the right side of the portrait, it contains Avalokitesvara Padma Karpo, a 16th century Buddhist scholar of the red-hat sect of Buddhism, Vajradhra with holding Vajra in his hand and depicts the supreme incarnation of lord Buddha associated with red-hat sect of Buddhism.
Opposite of the entrance, there is picture of Maitreya (the future Buddha or Buddha of Compassion) located at the centre of portrait. On the right side Buddha has been shown preaching and on left side he is making gesture of generosity. The wall murals also boast of paintings of Padme Sambhava (8th century Indian preacher of Buddhism in (Tibet) and Mila Ras-pa (spiritual head of the red-hat sect and famous ascetic).
Serzeng Temple- situated near by the royal quarters, the Serzeng temple is constructed by Senge Namgyal, a17th century Ladakhi King. The name of the temple is derived from the Buddhist canon manuscript written in gold, silver, and copper letters, and meaning is Gold and Silver. It is the two storey temple and includes mural paintings of Naropa, Tilopa, Marpa, Mila Ras and other historical persons related to red-hat sector of Buddhism. You will be amazed by the figures of wall paintings of Buddha. The temple also contains volumes of Buddha literary texts such as the Kandsur and the Tandsur.
Another holistic shrine is situated at the foothills of the Serzeng Temple, constructed in 1642 AD, devoted to wife of Senge Namgyal, a Balti Princess named Zeze Khatunee. The temple includes especially murals of Maitreya and other guardian divinities.
