Phyang Gompa

Located at a distance of 40 km to the west of the Leh town, Phyang Gompa is related to the Red Hat Sect of Buddhism. It was one of those sites which were given by Dhramaraja Jamyang Namgial to Chosje to Chosje Damma Kunga for the monastic purpose. The Phyang Monastery was constructed under the leadership of Lkra-Shis-Namgyal dynasty in 1500 AD.


It is branded as the Gougon gompa, means, blue peak, due to its enchanting location. It was the centre where at first, Digung teaching centre was started. At present it comes under the administration of Apchi Choski Dolma and has been ruled by the successive reincarnation of Skyabje Toldan Rinpoche. Inside the monastery you can find several holistic shrines including mesmerizing wall paintings dating back to royal period, adores the monastery.

Besides monastery, 900 year old museum is another visiting place of the Phyang. It is the perfect home to several idols, thankas, Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolians firearms and weapons. The management committee of the place organizes Gang-Sngon Tsedup Festival on 17th and 19th of the first month of the Tibetan Calendar where you can enjoy sacred masked dance performed by students of the monastery.
