| Alleppey or Alappuzha is notable for its boat races, houseboats, coir products, fish and lakes. It is known as ‘Venice of The East’ where traders, across the seven seas, came in search of black gold and souvenirs. It is also a shelter of Kuttand, ’The Rice Bowl of Kerla’, very few places in the world where rice-cultivation has been done below the sea-level. Alleppey Backwaters have become centre of tourist attractions from all over the world where they enjoy the serene marine beauty of the state. |
Water Sports- The golden sandy beaches of the backwaters boasts of numerous water sports for instance surfing, parasailing, beach volleyball, scuba diving. Boat Race- It is one of the prominent traditional sports of Kerla, the god’s own country, held between the second week of October and September. This festival represents the essence of the rich culture and heritage of Kerla where thousand of people gather to celebrate and witness the spectacular view especially of the Snake Boat Races. These scenes become truly unforgettable for anyone’s life time. The Nehru Trophy Boat race is one of the major tournaments of the festival. Ambalappuzha- It is one of the holiest places of Kerla representing typical architectural style of the state. Krishnapuram Palace- It is magnificent palace, built during the reign of Travancore monarch, Martanda Verma in 18th century portrays traditional architecture of Kerla- gabled roofs, dormer windows and narrow corridors. Pathiramanal- It is situated 14 km from Alleppey, a favourite home for rare migratory birds from all over the world. |
