Gujarat Tourism

From the Indus Valley Civilization to “The Father of the Nation,” the history of India isn’t complete without referring to this state lying in the country’s western frontier. With the Arabian Sea flanking the western and south western edges of Gujarat, this state has been blessed with the longest coastline in India running for 1600 kms that supports as many as 41 ports. Due to its strategic location, Gujarat has become India’s leading trade and commerce centre figuring among the top economies of the country.

An Indian history student will lea
rn more from a trip to Gujarat than from his books. Called “The Land Of The Legends”, Gujarat has produced leaders like Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Morarji Desai and K.M. Munshi, and even Mohammed Ali Jinnah, naming a few. Also some of the most popular Indian Independence revolts like the Satyagrahas, Bardoli, Borsad and the Salt Satyagraha took place in this state. Going further backwards, Lothal and Dholovira provide ample information on the life and culture of the Indus Valley Civilization.

Gujarat is a world in itself as it is home to a number of people having different customs, languages and festivals. Ahmedabad the capital city, Surat, Baroda and Rajkot are the major cities of the state. These cities epitomize the best of tradition, history, architecture and culture of the state. Gujarat is at its liveliest during the festival of Navratri, a cultural dance spanning nine days.

There are also several well-known museums that provide a glimpse into the state’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Some of them are the Calico Textile Museum, Sardar Patel Museum, Vadodara Museum and the Kutchh Museum.

The combined influences of Hinduism, Islam and European architecture have created temples and forts that are at their grandest best. The Bhandra Fort and the Teen Darwaja are visited for their architectural splendor. The Vijay Vilas Palace, Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal and the Lakhota Fort, Pavagadh Fort, Panchmahal District and the Uparkot Fort are other important historical sites.

Gujarat Tourism has been noted for its temples right from ancient times. Some of the most well-known temples are Akshardham Temple, Girnar Temple, Ambaji Temple, Palitana Temple, Dakor Temple, and the Sun Temple. The Somnath is another important religious and historical shrine. The Ambaji, Palitana, Girnar and Pavagadh hill-top temples have a prominent place in the history of the state.
