Pondicherry(earlier Puducherry) oris one of the largest Unions Territory of India, derived its name from Tamil vernacular which means ‘new land’. Once it was French colony of India and the influence of French settlement can be seen in its buildings. The Territory includes four disconnected settlements of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, situated in the Bay of Bengal. |
The Botanical garden is notable for its unusual specimen of plants. There are other tourist attractions in the island in which Raj niwas, the former palace of Dupleix now the residence of Puducherry’s Lieutenant Governor, Chunnambar boat house, Bharti Park, Museum, Romain Rolland Library, Ango-french Textile mills, the 400 – year old banyan tree at Keezhoor, and the coastal town of Marakanam are very famous Pondicherry Tourism is perfect destination for the persons who are seekers of peace and solace. It has more than 350 temples in which 7th century cave temple at Mandagapattu, Gingee, Singavaram and the temple town of Chidambaram are important. It is also a centre for major churches built in 18th and 19th century such as: Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Elise de Notre Dame de La Conception, the Elise de Notre Dame des Agnes, the Elise de Notre Dame de Lourdes and the Chapel of the Sisters of CUNY, in this way it reflects the fine amalgamation of different religions. |
